Twitter – Your Bio & How to Write it

It’s been a fair old while since I composed any posts about ‘how to’ Twitter.  In conversation with a friend this morning we went on to discussing her Twitter profile and bio.  She realised she didn’t have a bio written and I was gobsmacked.

Generally speaking, I never follow anyone who has an empty bio unless I know them.  By leaving your bio empty you are potentially missing out on countless valuable connections and opportunities, people (like me) will bypass you because you are not showing the value you will add to their tweeting experience.

This short space Twitter has set aside for you to showcase who you are allows you to give a snapshot of what your business is about and the benefits you offer your followers.  You need to be concise which can make this part tricky.  Some great examples below:

Both of the above have clear, snappy descriptions of who they are, what business they are in, what they can offer and a call to action in form of a link to their site/services.

I like the casual and to the point nature of this one:

And the concise yet detailed idea of this one:

You can click on any of the bios above to visit the Twitter profiles for these cool folk.  I selected them because I am interested in their tweets too, not just their bios, so give them a follow and tell them I sent you :)

In essence, you want to think of your bio as the hook to grab people’s attention.  Give away something personal, make yourself human and approachable and the golden rule?  Never use the bio space to sell.  People want to know about the value of your tweets rather than being pointed to your products or services, that all comes later.  Consider this the welcome mat to your Twitter home and you will do well.

I will finish with one of my own Twitter account bios and welcome any questions.  If you would like a review of your Twitter bio, please leave a comment below :)
